This is original YTMP material by Peter J. Reilly.

A friend of mine who is on the young side for a Millennial, but whose job keeps them in touch with Gen Z has alerted me to a new phenomenon affecting accountants.  This actually goes way back at least to late last summer and it has been noted in the accounting press, by Adrienne Gonzalez on Going Concern – OnlyFans Creators Are Saying They’re Accountants to Avoid Explaining They Sell Nudes on the Internet.

Ah yes, “I’m an Accountant,” the anthem of e-strippers everywhere. What a glorious timeline we live in.

So if next time you talk your mom and she gets a little too inquisitive about what you’ve been doing at work these days, now you know why. I say just to mix things up tell her you’re actually not an accountant but that you’re making a lucrative living selling feet pics on the internet.

Being a Forbes contributor, facebook, linkedin, twitter and just a touch of youtube along with this blog is about all the social media presence I can handle, so I was very unfamiliar with TikTok.  It allows users to publish very short videos.  I could see it being an incredible time sink, so I will probably stay away from it.  This accounts for me missing out on this till my Millennial friend reported it to me.

Ade Onibada reported on BuzzFeed the origin of the phenomenon as being a TikTok video by Rocky Paterra.

Watch on TikTok

The point of the song is that if he says he is a struggling actor, people ask him too many questions but that “nobody asks you question if you say you are an accountant”.  Of course that is not strictly true.  If you run into me and say you are an accountant and the circumstances are right I will ask you a ton of questions because I find accounting careers kind of fascinating. Also it is not unusual for people to ask tax questions.

At any rate Only Fans is another phenomenon that is not going to draw me in.  It is a platform that allows content creators to recruit subscribers. The platform takes 20% of the take, which can also include additional revenue besides the subscription. I suppose I could go on there and do tax videos, but as it happens sexual performances are what is grabbing media attention.

Whether it is serious or a joke, some of the performers, inspired by Rocky are using “I’m an accountant” to explain their earnings.

The best video on the topic I found is by jayntle on TikTok.

Jayntle on some sort of dating site (I think) put in her bio that she was an accountant – “but it’s because I’m an actual fucking  accountant, okay? I do taxes 40 hours a week!”  You really have to watch it to fully appreciate it.

Based on one of my surveys and coverage by Going Concern to the contrary notwithstanding actual accountants seem pretty unaware of this phenomenon.

“Is this really a thing?” is running at 70.9% and so far it seems that only one person is troubled by it.

Note

For an in depth look at the phenomenon of stripping moving from the club to the studio and a fast paced action packed thriller you might want to consider Stripper by Thomas Burns where he introduces millennial detective Natalie McMasters.  It is the start of a great series.
