This is part of a series on Lafayette’s visit to Massachusetts August 23, 1824 to September 3 1824.

Brigadier General James Appleton

Monday August 30 was Lafayette’s last full day in Boston during 1824. Brigadier General James Appleton (1785-1862) led a brigade consisting of five infantry regiments and six companies of artillery in parade on the Common. Tents and marquees had been pitched for their accommodation. Brigadier General Lyman led the Boston Brigade consisting of three infantry regiments, four artillery companies and troop of dragoons. Major-General Crane commanded the whole field.

There is an estimate that there were 6,500 troops encamped on the Common. They spent hours demonstrating various maneuvers.

In the evening the General held a levee at which several hundred ladies were introduced to him.  He then attended a ball given by Mrs. Elliot in Beacon-street.
