I’m not at all disappointed that these guys were nailed, but the case is still a little troubling.  How many people who sign 990′s carefully read and understand all the questions?  The forms have gotten even more elaborate then they were in the nineties.  Preparers sometimes don’t understand the organization too well and the people who understand the organizations don’t understand the forms.

Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one’s affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions. To demand more in the name of morals is mere cant.
