Miss Abigail Soper, the daughter of Jacob Soper the blacksmith, presented him with a bouquet, and the General, in true French style, stooped and kissed her on both cheeks. It is said, that several years later, when this fact was mentioned in the presence of the Rev. Mr. Moulton, the latter quietly remarked, “As I remember Abigail Soper, she was a very ugly old woman, and it would have taken a hero of several wars to have kissed her on even one cheek.” Miss Soper was about 16, at the time of Lafayette’s visit.

A just estimate of the value of rational liberty led you disinterested, to participate with strangers in the toils, the privations and the dangers of an arduous contest.  From the 19th day of April 1775 here noted in blood, to the memorable day in Yorktown, you heart and your sword were with us.

Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one’s affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions.
