In the rich harvest you are now gathering of the expressions of esteem and gratitude of this numerous people, whose freedom and happiness  your exertions so essentially contributed to establish, we hope you find some compensation for  all your trials, sacrifices, and sufferings-and we feel much complacency-that, in this respect you  have gained so complete a triumph over the Monarchs of the world.

Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one’s affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions.
