You could also buy and sell land and grain. After playing the game for a while I concluded that planting and harvesting were a waste of time. You could win by focusing on land and grain speculation. And I just let my peasants eat cake.

Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions. To demand more in the name of morals is mere cant.
